What Is a Lifestyle?

A lifestyle is a set of interests and behaviors that characterize a person. Lifestyle was coined by Austrian psychologist Alfred Adler in the 1929 book, The Case of Miss R. Adler explained lifestyle as a person’s basic character as established during childhood. Among the many things lifestyle relates to is one’s health and appearance. But there is more to lifestyle than appearance. A person’s personality is also influenced by their lifestyle, as they may be more likely to be interested in certain hobbies or activities.

A lifestyle includes a person’s way of life, which includes the pursuit of interests and hobbies, fashion choices, and social fulfillment. The expression of a lifestyle is influenced by the individual’s status in the community, work, family, and culture. It can be characterized by physical appearance, how others perceive one’s social status, and the attitude a person adopts to maintain or gain status. There are many types of lifestyles.

A lifestyle can differ between urban metropolises and rural environments. Even within urban areas, location affects lifestyle, as does proximity to natural environments. It can also reflect a person’s view on religion, politics, health, and intimacy. It can also describe their social relationships. Whether a person prefers a traditional or modern lifestyle is influenced by his or her lifestyle. If a person wants a partner, he or she may want a life partner with similar interests.
