Definitions of Health
There are many different definitions of health, and some of them may conflict with one another. In other cases, good health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. Health is a complex concept that reflects a person’s genetics, lifestyle, and environment. A good health definition must allow for changes in the environment and the presence of risk factors for disease. The following are some basic definitions of health. Some of them may apply to you.
The definition of health in the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms (CHAFT) includes the animate and inanimate environments, physical, mental, social, and economic dimensions of life. It also emphasizes the relationship between health and participation in society. In short, health is the ability to enjoy a quality of life. In a society, this participation is essential for achieving and maintaining optimal health. So, what does “health” mean to you?
The answers to this question vary widely among Canadians. Some attribute their good health to luck and family history. While others attribute their good health to genetics, the majority say it’s a product of their lifestyle. The amount of exercise and stress you experience in daily life is a major contributing factor. Having a clean environment and a safe neighborhood can improve your overall health. Healthy environments and safe neighborhoods also contribute to personal satisfaction. The lack of nature and recreational areas in communities can also affect your health.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has defined health as complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing. This is consistent with the biopsychosocial model of health, which combines the physiological, psychological, and social components of health. While the latter definition is largely individualistic, the former recognizes the role of genetics in disease. Neither definition is complete, but it’s a good start. If you have an inherited genetic disorder or an ailment, the condition is considered “disease” by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
