BU Fellowships & Grants

Unlike loans, Fellowships & Grants can help you finance your graduate studies and postgraduate activity. Most fellowships are short-term, but can also last several years. They typically include a stipend, but may also come with additional benefits, such as health insurance or student loan repayment. While these programs are usually intended to foster professional development, they also require a significant time commitment from the fellow. These funds may be awarded by corporations, nonprofit organizations, and governmental agencies.

As the funding opportunity announcement and SOP for Fellowships and Grants often specify, all applications must be submitted electronically. If the fellowship funds are not for research purposes, the applicant must cover tuition costs, training-related expenses, and stipends. The deadlines for applications vary by fellowship, so you should check the instructions carefully before applying. Moreover, be prepared to present your research in a compelling and creative manner.

For postdoctoral training, an individual can apply for the NRSA Individual Postdoctoral Fellowship. This fellowship requires a doctoral degree from an accredited institution and may also support training in a foreign country. Detailed justifications of why training in a foreign country is superior to training at home must be included. Unlike other fellowships, the NRSA Individual Postdoctoral Fellowship does not renew, so you should plan on a 12-month commitment. However, you may be allowed to spend part-time activities, as long as they do not interfere with the duration of the Fellowship.

BU also sponsors several fellowships and grants internally. The Graduate School encourages graduate students to apply for these programs and grants. For more information about these programs, check out the BU Center for the Humanities’ website. The Office of Sponsored Programs and Foundation Relations also assists with grant applications. It is a good idea to research your options before applying for external funding opportunities. However, be aware that some fellowships may have specific eligibility requirements.
